At Academic Publications of Health, Medical and Pharmacy, we are committed to making high-quality research accessible to everyone. Open access (OA) is a publishing model that ensures research outputs are freely available online to anyone with an internet connection, without subscription or paywall barriers. This approach supports the widest possible dissemination and use of research, helping knowledge travel further and faster.
Open access means that research articles, books, and other scholarly outputs are published online in a way that allows anyone — researchers, educators, professionals, policymakers, and the public — to read, download, share, and build on research without financial or technical restrictions. OA content is typically provided under licences that grant broad rights for reuse and distribution.
Publishing open access offers advantages for authors, institutions, funders, and the global research community:
Greater visibility and impact: Open access articles are more easily discovered, read, and cited by a global audience.
Faster knowledge transfer: Immediate access accelerates the pace at which research can be used and built upon.
Public engagement: Research becomes accessible to people outside traditional academic audiences, including practitioners, educators, and the broader public.
Compliance with funder requirements: Many research funders and institutions now require or encourage open access publishing.
Authors can publish their work open access through several options:
Gold Open Access – Published immediately as OA in fully open access journals or hybrid journals that offer an OA option.
Green Open Access – Authors may deposit a version of their manuscript in an institutional or subject repository, sometimes after an embargo period, subject to publisher policy.
Content published open access is generally licensed under a Creative Commons licence or equivalent framework, setting out clear rights for reuse and distribution.
Open access is part of a broader open research ethos that encourages transparency and reuse of research outputs — including data, code, and preprints — to foster collaboration, reproducibility, and innovation across the scholarly ecosystem.
Because publishing involves peer review, editing, and digital publishing services, open access publications may incur fees — commonly called Article Processing Charges (APCs) or Book Processing Charges (BPCs) — which are typically covered by authors’ institutions or funders. Many universities and research funders offer support to help authors cover these costs.
We also provide guidance and support to help authors identify potential funding sources and understand open access options.
